Butter Tarts—A Canadian Heritage
If there's one food that defines our national identity -- it's the butter tart! It's definitely part of our heritage.
Runny or firm, raisins or plain, butter crust or --dare I say it? --lard-based crust, when you think of a defining Canadian staple, it's gotta be a butter tart.
"They're Canadian, that's for sure," says well-known foodie Margaret Fraser, "Everyone has a favourite."
Where did they come from? Theories prevail about their origin and whether they were adapted from southern pecan pie, old-fashioned sugar pies or vinegar pies, but "we do know they are uniquely Canadian," adds Fraser.
Canadians are golden all right!
And so is our butter tart.
